Although the exact process varies between providers, most prepaid electricity
purchases follow a similar process.
1. Enter Your Meter Details
The customer provides information such as their:
- Meter number
- Meter type
- Electricity provider
- Purchase amount
This information tells the vending system where the electricity purchase should be sent.
2. Validate the Meter
The platform may first verify the meter details.
Meter validation helps confirm that the meter exists and that the information
provided is correct before the transaction continues.
This is important because paying for electricity is only useful if the purchase
is linked to the correct meter.
3. Make the Payment
Once the meter has been validated, the customer completes payment.
Depending on the platform, available payment methods may include:
- Bank transfers
- Cards
- USSD
- Mobile wallets
- Other digital payment methods
The payment system then confirms whether the transaction was successful.
4. Process the Electricity Purchase
After payment, the vending platform sends the transaction information
to the relevant electricity vending system.
The system processes the purchase based on details such as the meter number,
electricity provider, meter type, and amount.
5. Generate and Deliver the Token
For prepaid meters, a successful purchase generates an electricity token
that the customer can enter into their meter.
The token may be delivered through:
- SMS
- Email
- Mobile apps
- Websites
- API responses
This final step is particularly important. A payment confirmation isn't enough—
the customer needs access to the token they paid for.
